Organize Your Cruise Wales Adventure, Visit Holyhead And Anglesey

    By Cruiser | July 30, 2010

More people are deciding to cruise Wales and other British ports as a new option, and such is the popularity that Welsh ports could soon be rubbing shoulders with top European cruise market destinations.

So concluded a recent report prepared by a committee of legislators in the House of Commons, the British Parliament. Among the key points raised in the report were a strenthening in the UK cruise market over the past ten years, with a recommendation that Wales takes a slice of the action and so boosts Welsh port economies.

But a note of warning for devoted ocean travellers looking to cruise Anglesey, because at present there are insufficient docking facilities and infrastructure at many Welsh ports to cope with the increasingly bigger cruise liners cruising North European waters.

A $2m campaign called the “Celtic Wave” and led by Anglesey has started, covering ports in Ireland and Wales, with the objective of getting more cruise visitors to these locations and then to visit attractions in the nearby areas.

In Cardiff the Welsh Assembly Government has urged the UK government to put their weight behind extra infrastructure funding to get these ports, including Holyhead, Anglesey, Swansea, Newport and Milford Haven, up to the high standards expected by the cruise liner firms.

Going forward Welsh ports can also enjoy the benefits of a popular cruise market like those curently experienced by ports in the Baltic region of Northern Europe.

From the Holyhead Port in north west Wales to Swansea and Newport in South Wales, Welsh ports can act as engines of economic recovery when they persuade travellers to cruise Wales.

The first cruise ship visited Newport in Summer 2009, where the nearby Celtic Manor Hotel will host the 2010 Ryder Cup..Among the close by attractions cruise passengers from Newport could visit are the Millennium Centre and Cardiff Castle.

In the same way cruise ship passengers arriving at Holyhead port can make their way by coach to fantastic island locations such as South Stack lighthouse, a windmill at Llynnon, a fine castle of Wales at Beaumaris or the mainland castles at Caernarfon and Conwy.

To upgrade docking facilites for the expected increase in cruise ship arrivals at Holyhead, the Welsh Assembly Government will make finance available to strengthen the jetty used by the former Anglesey Aluminium smelter. This presents an excellent secluded mooring and suitable disembarkation point for cruise line passengers.

When this upgrade is finished it should see the Holyhead outer harbour jetty capable of accommodating mega liners such as the Westerdam, a 2,000 passenger carrying, 285 metre liner.

There is a hopeful and exciting future for visitors to the UK looking to cruise Wales during their west European excursion experience, and as a part of this Holyhead port will no doubt contribute as guests set out to discover the many varied island attractions.
