How To Differentiate Between Dress Shawls And Wraps
By CruiseDirector | February 11, 2012
It can often be a challenge to accessorize when attending a more formal event. You have to choose carefully, especially when you consider that whatever you wear is likely to be scrutinized by other women in attendance. A particularly good idea for accessories you can use are dress shawls and wraps, which can go well with your ensemble if you know what to look for and how to match them with your wardrobe. Although shawls and wraps can be worn similarly, there are quite a few differences between the two that make either one more appropriate for certain occasions. Because shawls are of exaggerated width, they look best when draped across the shoulders and covering the torso for a more sophisticated look. Wraps on the other hand aren’t as wide and can vary in length, which can affect how they can be worn. Both of them can be very versatile and come in a whole range of colors and designs you can simply choose from.
If there is a material that is best for these formal events, it is Pashmina. Pashmina comes from the undercoat of the Himalayan mountain goat and is five times thinner than the human hair. This hair allows the mountain goat to retain a lot of its warmth, keeping it close to its body. Pashmina is one of the rarest and most luxurious wools on the market today, and pashmina shawls and wraps make for one of the best accessories one can wear at a formal event. This is not only a result of their rarity and luxury, but for their functionality as well, keeping the wearer warm by insulating them and trapping body heat from escaping. There are some Pashmina shawls and wraps that are actually a mix of silk and Pashmina to make them more affordable while adding strength. It is also possible to mix Pashmina with cashmere, which is the coat that comes from the same Himalayan mountain goat that produces Pashmina.
Because of the differences in size and shape, shawls and wraps can be worn differently. For example, since wraps are thinner and aren’t as bulky, they can be worn around the head and shoulders, or as a substitute for the typical scarf. Shawls work better when draped over the shoulders because of the dramatic folds that can be achieved when worn this way. If you are buying either one of them for the first time, start out with a basic item like black pashmina shawls or wraps that can be paired with just about anything. Then you can build around it, buying more colors and designs to match other items in your closet.
