Most Important Things To Take With You On An Alaskan Cruise

    By CruiseDirector | April 27, 2009

An Alaskan cruise is definitely one of those one in a lifetime experiences.  You will see sights and animals that you never even new existed and are not visible any other way than by boat. You cannot even see them on Canada Holidays cruises. It’s not like any other cruises you will have been on however so don’t expect to pack the same as might have done before. So which items are the most important to take?

Lots of warm clothes. It might sound like a silly thing to need to remind people but a lot of tourists associate cruises with sun and heat. The temperature can get quite low during Alaskan winters, often nearing -30°C. The summer time offers some more reasonable temperatures but if you are going to be in the elements you will still need some clothes with decent warmth.

Binoculars. If you forgot these you will be kicking yourself. When all around you are pointing at things and smiling with joy, you will be struggling to make out a very small dot that could be a penguin. Because everything is so big in Alaska, including the boats, most of the things you want to look at will be reasonably small in comparison. Binoculars will save your eyesight and give you a much clearer picture of what is going on.

Camera. You might not even require a pair of binoculars if you find that you camera has a good enough zoom. But for most of us we will probably need both. A camera is not only useful for studying the pictures after you have taken them but also to share the experience of your great Alaska cruise with friends and family when you return.

Wildlife book.If you spot an unknown animal and have any resource to look it up in, it will play with your mind for a long time. It can also be quite fun learning about the wildlife and understanding what their actions mean and how they go about their days.

Thermos. If you’re likely to be spending a lot of your time above deck then you’ll grow to fall in love with your thermos. There is not a great deal more I can add.
