Obtaining Charter Yacht Insurance
By CruiseDirector | March 7, 2010
Renting a yacht for a few short hours is becoming quite a common occurrence and it is often from these short excursions that people think it is a good idea to rent for a greater period. Although this is great to do, there are a few factors that you will have to take into consideration; one of those factors is yacht insurance and when it comes to chartering a private yacht, many people who do not even realize that they need to have insurance for themselves.
There are many circumstances where the use of insurance is ignored although in all good conscience it should not be but when you rent a yacht for a long period, there is no excuse not to have adequate travel insurance protection. Unfortunately the vast majority of people believe that they are protected by the yacht insurance they take out when they arrange the charter.
Personal belongings and the renters require a separate travel insurance plan to cover themselves as the insurance already arranged was just to protect the craft and her crew members. In all probability, travel insurance will not be necessary but can you afford to take the risk of not arranging this important cover to protect yourself and your family.
There are many aspects to travel insurance including policies that will pay compensation should a trip be cut short or medical attention is required. Although you are able to tailor make these travel insurance policies, certain aspects should always be included, irrespective of circumstances.
The number one priority of your travel insurance should be accidental death and although this is highly unlikely, do you want to chance this? Accidents, although unlikely can be much more serious when at sea and delays can occur when medical assistance is required. Perhaps you now understand just why accidental death cover is so important when you arrange travel insurance.
As often as not, personal possessions are something that is often claimed for so you will need to make sure you travel insurance covers these to a high enough level. You will need to ensure the travel insurance cover for personal belongings will cover the cost of replacement as many items we carry with us are expensive and no-one knows if they could be lost, stolen or damaged during the trip.
This is where reading the fine print matters as the last thing you want to happen is to put in a claim and have it rejected because you did not read the policy properly. The costs for travel insurance are not normally high so don’t skimp on this necessary ‘piece of mind’ cover when you book your charter yacht.
