Where To Go To Get A Child Passport For Children Under 16

Children and adults have the same basic requirements when it comes to applying for a US passport. However, there are also special requirements that need to be met by those applying for a child’s passport. These requirements are simply designed to show proof of a minor’s relationship with the parents or guardians, as well as to establish the identity of those representing the applicant.
When talking about special requirements for minors, there are different requirements for those under 16 than for those who are 16-17 years old. In this article, we’ll be dealing with the special requirements of those who are under 16. This category includes newborns and infants.
Every passport applicant needs a completed form when doing a passport-related transaction. In this case, the Form DS-11 is needed. This is the type of form that all first-time passport applicants have to fill in. And since we’re dealing with minors here, the parents and guardians of the applicants should make it a point to assist these minors when filling in this form when applicable.
Along with the DS-11, applicants should also show proof of their citizenship. Applicants can choose from any of the documents that are accepted for this purpose. These documents are: birth certificate, certificate of citizenship, and certificate of naturalization. In case the applicant was born abroad, a consular report on his or her birth may also be submitted.
Then, of course, there’s another basic requirement: two recent color photos. These will then be attached on the appropriate portion on the DS-11. Before having their pictures taken, the parents or guardians should ensure that they are familiar with the specifications of the photos. Otherwise, they can easily visit the US State Department’s website for more information. Alternatively, they could also get in touch with the passport office nearest them.
The items that we have already mentioned in the previous paragraphs are the basic requirements. Again, these are the requirements performed by both adults and minors. We also mentioned that there are special requirements that applicants under 16 have to fulfill. They are needed to establish the relationship between the applicant and parent/guardian, and to establish their identities.
On top of the list of these special requirements is the written parental consent. There are also specific guidelines for this, so it’s best that you check with the passport office before proceeding with this step. The parent/guardian is also required to present an ID when submitting the passport application form. This ID should also be photocopied and attached to the other required documents. Then, finally, the parent/guardian must establish the relationship between them and the applicant. When submitting the passport, the applicable fees must then be paid.
