Will Exploration In Antarctica Soon Cease?

    By CruiseDirector | January 15, 2010

It was only a hundred years ago that the first wailing ship, called the Antarctic, landed off the coast of this wind-battered, volcanic coast and sent a part on a longboat through the rough Ross Sea to explore the shore and surrounding area. The leader of this party was Captain Leonard Kristensen and they were the first people to set foot on Antarctica. This historic event happened on January 24, 1895 while on a mission to kill whales in waters that remained unclaimed.

In other words, Antarctica was first christened in the search of whales and the discovery of numerous other money producing animals. While seals were being slaughtered for their fur, whales and penguins were being killed for their oil which was then used to grease the machinery developed during the Industrial Revolution.Submissive penguins by the hundreds of thousands, were paraded up planks only to plunge off the edge of cauldrons filled with boiling oil, so that their own oil could be relinquished.

Now, 100 years later, this Frozen Continent is going to be used as a natural preserve of nature and science forevermore. This means that humans can no longer voyage to Antarctica in search of a quick way to make money through killing. There has even been discussion about a world park being established. For science, Antarctica provides an opportunity to study the effects of global pollutants like the depletion of the ozone layer and the greenhouse effect.Thankfully, humanity’s presence in Antarctica was short-lived, and the reversal of the travesties committed on this great continent are now a thing of the past. There were only parts of the coastline, the islands, and several paths to the South Pole investigated until the International Geophysical Year of 1957-1958.cruises to antartica

From the very first, the appearance of men on this continent has resulted in a convoluted story of nationalism, aggression, idealism, and unchecked slaughter, with sporadic, cavalier attempts toward scientific research. The whaling industry experienced a boom during World War I because of the oil needed to make glycerin for artillery shells. After World War II began, Americans and the Soviets both needed to produce extra-fine oil for their jet engines. So, the Soviets and the Americans both began hunting sperm whales.Until the International Geophysical Year of 1957-58, much of this continent was considered ‘Terra Australia Incognita’ – a theoretical continent delineated by medieval mapmakers.

As a matter of fact, the first person to be born in Antarctica is still too young to be considered an adult. It is important to understand that even this birth has a patriotic pretense. It was 1978, on Argentina’s Esperanza Base, that the pregnant mother of Emilio Marcus Palmer was flown in to give birth to him on location, specifically to underscore Argentina’s claim to a large portion of Antarctic territory.antarctic cruise reviews

This occurred nine years after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the moon and placed America’s flag on it as a symbol of America’s dominance over other nations.Norway’s Roald Amundsen 1911 race to the South Pole was done explicitly to honor King Haakon VII, and make a direct claim on the territory. This journey was also made by Robert F. Scott and his team for the British Empire, however they also took rock and fossil samples which had they transported by toboggans.

After discovering that despite all their hard work, Amundsen had beaten them to the Pole by an entire month, Scott’s party perished in Antarctica due to a combination of bad luck, the pain of hauling massive amounts of rock, and poor diet. This made them the first team of martyrs for the cause of science in Antarctica.America earned its claim to the South Pole when Richard Byrd flew over it in 1929 in a Ford Trimotor. The Soviets made their interests in Antarctica with the journey of Russian Admiral Thaddeus Bellingshaunsen past the Antarctic Peninsula in 1821.
