A First Grader’s First Trip To Antarctica

    By CruiseDirector | September 10, 2010

For this boy, what he loves include penguins, the outdoors, messing around on the computer, and of course Legos . Other than seeing his beloved birds in the wild as they waddle across the ice this first grader will also be able to witness how they feed their newly hatched chicks in Antarctica early next month . Not only will he and his parents be embarking on a trip to the Antarctic Peninsula but they will be joined by an internationally known explorer and filmmaker as well .

From the children who are about his age, this continental trip is rare . Celebrations are being held by his friends for such an incredible trip . Also coming on the trip are all of his classmates explaining such jubilation. An Internet linkup will be their way of joining in the exploration so as not to cost thousands of dollars . Even other students will be able to view the live video coverage for the trip . Learn about Antarctic Cruising Tours.

As part of the pilot youth program, they’ll be able to participate in live question and answer sessions on the site . Using the boy’s dispatches, teachers will heighten the learning experience by incorporating a number of grade level activities . The weather will be given to first graders, fourth graders will take geology, and fifth graders will be assigned to forces in motion .

An opportunity for adventure is given to the family . For this trip she will be the voice of reason and this is what the mother said after commenting on how the boy loves nature so much . Just a little motivation can go a long way in helping you achieve your dreams, said the boy .

When it comes to webcasts, they are pretty ordinary . For the explorer who is not only the first to ice bike 250 miles across Antarctica but also the first American to ski to the South Pole, this kind of experience with kids will also be a first . From science to extreme skiing, the pursuits they had since 1999 on over a dozen trips to the continent were ideal for adults . The people he considered to be the best recipients for the knowledge of Antarctica that he could share were the children . A kids’ program was decided upon about a year ago . As a person looking for Antarctica Vacations you should visit that site.

When it comes to the timing, the trip is lucky enough to have been decided upon just when the March of the Penguins movie has caused a stir . Possibly bringing together the boy’s mother and the explorer is providence . Years ago was when the mother went to a local university with the 42 year old explorer but they lost contact only to regain it after hearing about his website from a mutual friend .

In Buenos Aires, Argentina was where the 14 day expedition started and the boy made his first live dispatch before it headed south . Then the travelers boarded a 100 passenger cruise ship, with a group of tourists who originated in Toronto for their voyage across the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula and surrounding islands . Much danger during the trip could be associated with the harsh sea weather that befell them during the 600 mile, 30 hour ride .

Still, the Drake Passage gave them a rare glimpse of dolphins, elephant seals, and whales . Once the vessel reaches the peninsula, the group will embark on rubber boats and visit beaches and bays that are inaccessible at other times of the year due to ice . Their visits will also take them to scientific research stations and penguin rookeries. The location of the colony of emperor penguins, made famous in the March of the Penguins and is the largest among the 17 species of penguins in Antarctica, is also known by the explorer .
