    Berlin History

    By CruiseDirector | September 2, 2010

Berlin has quite a history and there are countless landmarks which reflect this. Berlin was badly damaged in World War Two, but afterwards many buildings and structures were revived. It is very hard not to admire the beautiful architect in Berlin. When visiting Berlin these 5 landmarks should be seen :

The Cathedral of Berlin is the largest church in the town, and it serves as a crucial centre for the Protestant church of Germany. Its official name is Oberpfarr und Domkirche zu Berlin. Previously it was the official cathedral of the Prussian Hohenzollern royal family.

It was reconstructed in 1816-1822 following a design by the Berlin architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

The Alte Nationalgalerie on Museum Island in Berlin is a countrywide gallery illustrating a vast range of prime quality 19th century artwork including sculptures and paintings.

Alte Nationalgalerie came into existence in 1861, when banker J.H.W. Wagener left his art collection to the king to inherit. A new building was designed by Friedrich August Stler to house it with an architectural style that incorporates late-Classicism and early-Neorenaissance.

If you’re planning on visiting any of these fine landmarks, there are some great Berlin Vacation Rentals available around the city.

The Brandenburg Gate in German is called the ‘Brandenburger Tor ‘ and is a monument found adjacent to the border between west and east Berlin. The Brandenburg Gate is a huge gate built in the 18th century as an expression of peace.

The wall separating west and east Berlin, built by the East Germans in 1961, was not opened for unrestricted access in both directions till 1989. Since the decline of the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburg Gate has become the symbol of a reunified Berlin.

The Altes Museum was completed in 1830 and is a very important illustration in the architecture of Classicism. Designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the building incorporates the Greek Stoa in Athens as a model.

Built originally to display all of Berlin’s art collections, the Altes Museum has housed the Collection of Classical Antiquities since 1904. Between 1943 and 1945 fire seriously damaged the building. Reconstruction work started and was completed in 1966. Since 1998 the Collection of Classical Antiquities has shown off its Greek collection on the ground floor of the Altes Museum.

The Victory Column is one of the most noted monuments in Berlin. Work began by Heinrich Strack in 1864 to mark the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian war. By the time it was inaugurated on two September 1873 Prussia had also defeated Austria in the Austro-Prussian War and France in the Franco-Prussian War ( 1870 / 1871 ), giving the statue a new status.

The column sits on a hall of pillars with a glass mosaic designed by Anton von Werner and consists of 3 solid blocks of sandstone which are decorated by canon pipes caught from the enemies of the aforementioned 3 wars.

Berlin is one of Germany’s and Europe’s preferred visitor destinations, with so much rich history it enthralls old and young.
