Montserrat a wonderful place | A wonderful place: Montserrat | Montserrat: the beautiful mountain of barcelona

    By CruiseDirector | July 25, 2010

At about 45 minutes from Barcelona, visiting Montserrat is a wonderful day trip from Barcelona, and easily reached. Montserrat means the serrated mountain, and is in itself a wonder to marvel. If you take the train from Barcelona, which leaves from Placa Espanya, then you will enjoy some stunning scenery – essentially flat, till all of a sudden a huge rock form juts up from the earth – here you have Montserrat. The train stops in Olessa de Montserrat – the small town at the foot of the mountain. From here you have two techniques of transport to take you up to the mountain. First the “cremallera” or “zip train” takes you slowly up the incline – some 2400 feet. The train’s wheels are like toothed gears that run along a toothed track – just like a zip. Nevertheless by far the most spectacular strategy of transport is the cable automobile. Amazing views can be enjoyed from the cabin, including the breezy roads that licks it’s way up the mount, with coaches and autos admiring the views. This is a handy place to do Turismo Barcelona
At the very top is a catholic priory – built in 1025 – and the main attraction. There’s the attractive cathedral with the famous Black Madonna – discovered in a close-by cave. If you’re fortunate or plan in advance, then you may enjoy the choir singing their haunting melodies inside the cathedral. There are a number of walks along the breadth of the mountain-top – the Angel walk, the Santa Cova ( or holy cave, where the Black Madonna was found ), and all are easily accessible and enjoyed at leisure. The monks also have installations such as a self serviced cafe, present shop and museum and are extraordinarily accommodating, although it’s worth remembering that Catalan is their main language.
Montserrat’s history is completely full of engaging stories and yarns – diverse fires have raged and devastated lots of the chapels and installations and interesting photos can be seen of the varied catastrophes. There’s also a funicular train ( like a bus on a cable ) to take you to the top where you can actually marvel at the surroundings. As mentioned, a lot of the encircling area is flat, so that the scope for views and some superb photos are limitless. This place is near the terminales aeropuerto barcelona from where you can get straightforward
