Upcoming Events and Exhibitions in Florence Italy

    By CruiseDirector | March 17, 2010

Florence is the capitol of the Tuscany region of Italy and full of art, architecture and history. Situated on the banks of the Arno River, Florence is nestled among groves of olive trees and the charming Italian vineyards that make this one of the loveliest areas in all of Italy. There are many overwhelming sites, such as the Basilica di Santa Croce, Santa Maria de Fiore, and the Piazza della Stazione, just to name a few. You can tour these when you are finished at all the different restaurants and endless shopping areas! A vacation to Florence Italy will keep you occupied both day and night! To see all the upcoming events in Florence, visite the blog of Florence Hotel.

Two of the must-see attractions in the city are the Piazza della Signoria and the Palazzo Vecchio. The Piazza della Signoria is the biggest and most famous square of the two and is at the middle of the historical district. If offers an outdoor sculpture exhibit, which the public can see at no cost. If you love sculpture, be sure to visit the Loggia della Signoria where some of the most impressive examples, including a replica of Michelangelo’s David, are housed. Since the middle ages, Florence has been the political center of Italy. The Piazza, Florence’s town hall is here and among the sites that are open to the public are the elaborately decorated rooms and private apartments of the Palazzo Vecchio.

It’s always a challenge to decide which historical or cultural place of interest you should visit first. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is a favorite among tourists and locals alike. Construction was begun in the year 1296 and it was not completed and consecrated until 1436! This ornate Gothic cathedral is called a “duomo” in Italy and is definitely a “must see”! It holds over 20,000 people within it’s walls, and Brunelleschi’s Dome is in itself a master piece. If you’re game, you can climb 463 steps to the top of the cathedral and look out over the city. With its exterior walls of white, green and pink marble, the cathedral also boasts a number of magnificently decorated doors and a wide variety of statues that are on public display.

There is the Baptistery of John the Baptist, Campinile, or bell tower, and the Galleria degli Uffizi, just to name a few of the many places you should not miss. It’s a good idea to buy a Florence City Pass, which will give you access to as many sites as possible, and help you to make your stay in Florence truly memorable. The city pass not only provides admission, but also allows you to move ahead of the long lines of tourists that inevitably form outside all the amazing sites and attractions in Florence. You can easily book complete and uninterrupted tours of the Accademia Galleri and Uffizi galleries online for a relatively low price, usually just under one hundred dollars. There are many more to choose from.

You may want to consider renting a vacation property for your trip, so that you can relax and enjoy your stay to the fullest. Your own rooms will come complete with a kitchen, allowing you to shop for food in Florence and try your hand at Italian cooking. Another benefit of this is that it gives you the opportunity to get out and meet the local people while you shop in the local markets.
